Introduction to College Essay Writing
$80 for two 1.5-hour sessions
June 25 and July 2, 10:30-12:00

This course will educate students about the process of creating great college essays. While students will generate topic ideas during the course, it is definitely a pre-writing course, and I highly recommend that students work with a college admissions professional--like me!—throughout their individual writing process. Students will be need to complete approximately 1 hour of preparation work for each session.

  • Session 1: The role of essays in college admission; discussion of sample essays Set #1; orientation to the various applications (Common App, Coalition, UC, and out-of-state public schools); planning for multiple applications; topics vs. messages.

  • Session 2: The writing process; UC Questions; specific question types (Ex., "Why XYZ University?"); discussion of sample essays Set #2.

Rules for Life
$120 for four 1.5-hour sessions
June 24 and July 1, 8, 15, 10:30-12:00

I'm so excited for this one! From the Law of Diminishing Returns to Occam's Razor to the Sunk Cost Fallacy, we'll explore some of the most important distillations of human knowledge—all in a way that helps teenagers to better understand the world around them. Students will enjoy lots of guided breakout discussions and engaging thought experiments that lead not just to knowledge, but to wisdom.
SENSATION AND (MIS)PERCEPTION

$40 for a 1.5-hour session
July 6, 4:00-5:30

Surely you can trust your eyes and ears, right?

Well...maybe not. In this course we'll explore how vision and hearing work, and as we do, we'll mess with them in a myriad of ways. Remember "What color is the dress?" from a few years back? Like that, but times twenty, with some larger lessons about our brains thrown in for good measure. Let the fun begin!

(None of those circles are moving, by the way!)
ALL ABOUT MONEY (FOR TEENS)
Date and Time TBD pending potential co-host!

Money makes the world go 'round. In this course, we give teenagers the fundamentals to help them understand some of the basic elements of the adult financial world, like how investing works, what a stock is, how much money people actually make, and why credit cards can be such a trap.
